Tribal Protest in Siliguri Turns Tense, Police Use Water Cannons and Tear Gas

Tension gripped Siliguri in West Bengal after members of the tribal community staged a protest over an alleged assault case involving a tribal woman. A large number of demonstrators gathered to demand justice, leading to a confrontation with police forces deployed in the area.

Reason Behind the Protest

According to reports, the protest was triggered by allegations of assault and mistreatment of a tribal woman. Members of the community expressed anger over what they claimed was a delay in action against the accused.

The protesters demanded a fair investigation and strict legal action to ensure justice for the victim.

March Towards Administrative Headquarters

Demonstrators attempted to march towards “Uttarkanya,” the administrative headquarters of North Bengal. Anticipating unrest, the police had set up barricades and deployed additional personnel to maintain order.

When the crowd tried to move past the barricades, police used water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse the gathering. Reports suggest that mild force was also used in certain areas to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Police and Protesters’ Stand

Police officials stated that the measures were necessary to maintain law and order and prevent damage to public property. They maintained that efforts were made to keep the protest peaceful before resorting to force.

On the other hand, members of the tribal community claimed that their demonstration was intended to be peaceful and that they were merely seeking justice and accountability.

Social and Political Impact

The incident has sparked debate in the region, highlighting concerns related to tribal rights and community safety. The issue has drawn attention from various social and political groups, making it a matter of broader public discussion.

The protest in Siliguri underscores the sensitivity of issues related to tribal welfare and justice. While the immediate situation has been brought under control, the focus now shifts to the investigation and the steps authorities will take to address the concerns raised by the community.
