Does Drinking Brandy Really Cure Cough? Doctors Explain the Truth

During winters, people often try various home remedies to relieve cough, cold, and sore throat. One common belief is that drinking brandy or rum can cure cough. But is this claim scientifically true, or is it just a myth? Let’s find out what experts say.

What is Brandy and Why Do People Drink It?

Brandy is a type of alcohol made from fermented grapes or other fruits. During cold weather, people believe it provides warmth and some relief from cough and cold. Drinking it with warm water may create a soothing sensation in the throat.

What Do Doctors Say?

According to doctors, brandy does not cure cough or cold. It may offer temporary superficial relief, but it does not treat the underlying causes of cough, such as viral infections, allergies, or throat irritation. Experts note:

  • Alcohol can cause a warming sensation in the body as it dilates blood vessels.

  • It may temporarily numb the throat, but it does not fight infections.

  • Regular alcohol consumption can weaken the immune system, making recovery slower.

  • Giving brandy to children or teenagers is dangerous and inappropriate.

Is Brandy Safe for Children?

Some people give brandy to children for cough or cold relief. Doctors strongly advise against this as it can be harmful to children and may cause serious health risks, including low blood sugar, breathing problems, and negative effects on brain development.

Safer and More Effective Alternatives

Doctors recommend safer remedies for cough and cold, such as:

  • Herbal teas like tulsi-ginger or honey-lemon drinks

  • Steam inhalation or warm fluids

  • Adequate rest and proper hydration

These remedies are much safer and more effective than alcohol.

Drinking brandy or rum does not cure cough or cold. It may provide a temporary feeling of warmth or relief, but the real causes remain untreated. Following doctor-recommended safe remedies is the best way to recover quickly. Alcohol-based home remedies should never be given to children.
