Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently criticized Team India’s management and selection decisions, highlighting what he described as unfair treatment of fast bowler Arshdeep Singh. Speaking on his YouTube show, Ashwin expressed concern over how Arshdeep was handled despite his consistent performances.
The Issue
Arshdeep Singh was left out of the playing XI in the first two matches of the ODI series against New Zealand, even though he had delivered strong performances in previous games. Team management explained that other bowlers were given a chance for match practice.

Ashwin stated that keeping a deserving player on the bench repeatedly is unfair. He emphasized that when a player performs consistently, they deserve a chance to play with confidence. According to him, cricket is not just a game of skill but also a game of confidence, and sitting out matches can affect a player’s rhythm and morale.
He also questioned why the team does not consider the mental state of players, as repeatedly being benched can dampen motivation and focus.
Squad Rotation or Poor Management?
Some argue that Arshdeep was rested to keep him fresh for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. However, Ashwin rejected this reasoning, pointing out that even in this format, Arshdeep is no longer an “automatic choice,” especially under the new coaching setup.
He added that even if Arshdeep gets a chance in the third ODI, missing out on the first two games can still impact him. Ashwin stressed that whenever Arshdeep has played, he has performed excellently and deserves respect and a secure place in the team.
Ashwin’s comments highlighted that selection decisions and playing XI management can significantly affect players’ confidence and careers. He urged that talented players should be given opportunities based on performance and treated as trusted members of the team.
