Holika Dahan 2026: Date, Shubh Muhurat, Puja Vidhi and Mythological Significance

Holika Dahan is an important Hindu ritual observed on the night before the festival of Holi. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil and marks the spiritual beginning of the Holi celebrations. The ritual is performed on the full moon night (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Phalguna, followed by the festival of colors the next day.

Holika Dahan 2026 Date

In 2026, Holika Dahan will be observed on 3 March 2026. The festival of colors, known as Holi or Dhulandi, will be celebrated on 4 March 2026.

Traditionally, Holika Dahan is performed after sunset during the Pradosh Kaal, which is considered the most auspicious period for the ritual.

Auspicious Muhurat (Shubh Muhurat)

According to the Hindu Panchang, the auspicious time for Holika Dahan in 2026 is expected to be from 6:22 PM to 8:50 PM. Performing the ritual within this time frame is considered spiritually beneficial.

It is important to avoid performing Holika Dahan during the Bhadra period, as it is generally considered inauspicious for such rituals.

Mythological Significance

The story of Holika Dahan is associated with the devotee Prahlad and the demon king Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu wanted everyone to worship him as a god, but his son Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu.

Angered by Prahlad’s devotion, Hiranyakashipu ordered his sister Holika, who had a boon that protected her from fire, to sit in a blazing fire with Prahlad on her lap. However, due to divine intervention, Prahlad remained unharmed while Holika was burned to ashes.

This event symbolizes the triumph of faith, righteousness, and devotion over arrogance and evil.

Holika Dahan Puja Vidhi (Ritual Procedure)

The ritual of Holika Dahan involves traditional worship and symbolic offerings. The general steps include:

  1. Take a bath and wear clean clothes before the ritual.

  2. Arrange wood, dried cow dung cakes, and other materials at the designated place.

  3. Prepare puja items such as turmeric, rice, coconut, sacred thread, flowers, and sweets.

  4. Perform a ceremonial circumambulation (parikrama) of the Holika structure while offering prayers.

  5. Light the bonfire during the auspicious muhurat and pray for prosperity, happiness, and protection from negative energies.

In many regions, newly harvested crops are also offered into the fire as a symbol of gratitude and abundance.

Religious and Social Importance

Holika Dahan is not only a religious ritual but also a celebration of community bonding and cultural unity. The burning of Holika represents the destruction of negativity and the welcoming of positivity, joy, and new beginnings.

The ritual reminds devotees that truth, faith, and devotion ultimately prevail over evil forces.

Holika Dahan 2026 will be observed on 3 March, followed by Holi on 4 March. Performing the ritual during the prescribed auspicious time holds spiritual significance. The festival carries a timeless message of righteousness, faith, and the victory of good over evil.
