Gokyo Lakes, Nepal – The World’s Highest Freshwater Lake System

Located in the Himalayas of Nepal, Gokyo Lakes form the highest freshwater lake system in the world, situated at an altitude of approximately 4,700 to 5,050 meters. The region offers a stunning combination of turquoise lakes, massive glaciers, and some of the world’s tallest peaks rising above 4,000 meters.

Introduction to Gokyo Lakes

The Gokyo Valley is home to six main glacial lakes, collectively considered the highest freshwater lake system in the world:

  • Longpong Lake – 4,650 meters

  • Taboche Tsho – 4,690 meters

  • Dudh Pokhari / Gokyo Cho – 4,750 meters

  • Thonak Tsho – 4,834 meters

  • Ngozumpa Tsho – 4,950 meters

  • Gyazumpa Tsho – 5,050 meters

The lakes are fed by melting glaciers, and their mineral-rich waters give them a deep turquoise-blue color, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Why Gokyo Lakes Are Special

Gokyo Lakes are a paradise for trekkers and travelers seeking serenity away from crowded tourist spots. The valley offers peaceful and scenic surroundings that are ideal for photography, hiking, and nature enthusiasts.

Gokyo Ri – The Best Viewpoint

Located near the lakes, Gokyo Ri is a popular peak that offers panoramic views of four of the world’s tallest mountains from a single point:

  • Mount Everest

  • Cho Oyu

  • Lhotse

  • Makalu

Many trekkers believe that the view of Everest from Gokyo Ri is even more spectacular than the view from Everest Base Camp.

How to Reach Gokyo Lakes

The journey to Gokyo Lakes usually begins from Kathmandu, Nepal. Travelers fly to Lukla, which serves as the starting point for the trek. From Lukla, the trek passes through dense forests, high-altitude villages, and stunning Himalayan landscapes before reaching the Gokyo Valley.
